PRELUDE (Aproximate running time: 1min 0 sec) On November 27th in the year one thousand ninety five, Annus Domini, outside the city of Clermont in present-day France, Pope Urban II held a mass council before gathered bishops, cardinals, priests, emissaries, princes, and knights representing kingdoms from the far reaches of Western Christendom. He delivered his speech with the explicit purpose of organizing a collective military and spiritual enterprise designed to wage battle against the armies of the antichrist in the penultimate goal of recapturing the Heavenly city of Jerusalem as preparation for the return of their Lord Savior Jesus Christ and the incurrment of the reign of the saints and thus, Armageddon. This Holy War, fueled by apocalyptic expectations, would forever change the face of Europe, Byzantium, and the Far East. The military campaign, one of biblical proportions, would become known simply as The First Crusade, and its members would be named the CHRISTI MILITES PEREGRINI: THE PILGRIM SOLDIERS OF CHRIST. |
