FILMMAKER STATEMENT   By Writer & Director Giovanni Zelko:
“L.A. 4ORCE presents a contemporary neo-noir crime story inspired by my love of the many classic noir films of the 1940’s & 1950’s, from The Maltese Falcon in 1941 to A Touch Of Evil in 1958 and many in between, especially Kiss Me Deadly, Criss Cross and The Big Sleep, as well as the neo-noir and retro-noir films of the 1970’s to 1990’s, mostly based in Los Angeles, in particular Chinatown (1974,) Heat (1995,) and L.A. Confidential (1997).  Similar to many of these films, my film L.A. 4ORCE places a mirror up to the darker side of contemporary society and reflects real-world concerns about public safety, crime & punishment, all within the stylized context of Los Angeles based noir films.  L.A. 4ORCE blends police-procedural storytelling with character-driven drama, action and suspense via interwoven story lines involving multiple points of views from detectives, criminals, vigilantes and news coverage to create a dynamic and entertaining crime thriller.  As an homage to the preceding noir, retro-noir and neo-noir films shot in Los Angeles, I sought out the many iconic Los Angeles locations in those important films and found ways to incorporate them in my film in organic ways to compliment the story and characters, especially the Los Angeles City Hall building featured in many films such as D.O.A., Criss Cross and Crime Wave, the Frolic Room bar on Hollywood Blvd from L.A. Confidential, the Venice Beach arches on Venice Blvd from A Touch Of Evil, the Santa Monica Pier from Mildred Pierce, the 10401 Wilshire Blvd apartment building from Kiss Me Deadly, Union Train Station from Criss Cross, the  Chinatown arches from Chinatown, Angel’s Flight train on Bunker Hill from The Killing, and San Pedro harbor neighborhood from Chinatown.  The number “4” in the title of L.A. 4ORCE not only represents the four vigilantes, but also the four groups of character perspectives: vigilantes, police, criminals and society’s views via the news programs, all of which combined place the viewer in the center of the swirling city of Los Angeles.   Although L.A. 4ORCE is a contemporary crime thriller, it has all the exciting archetypal elements of classic Los Angeles Noir films: femmes fatales, crime, resolute detectives, mystery, murder, betrayal, revenge, stark camera angles, flashbacks, dreams, cigar smoking (in place of cigarettes), high contrast lighting, double crosses, venetian blinds, dark themes of a haunted past resolved in shadowy urban streets of Los Angeles, and even a fedora-wearing gangster played by Harry Lennix.”
